URSULA MISZKIEL
Immigration & Human Rights
Called to the UK Bar in 1994, Ursula began her career practising in General Common Law and Immigration, Human Rights and Public Law and was soon being instructed in matters that became important test cases (see Case History).
Ursula spent several years lecturing on Immigration and Human Rights Law at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. From 2004-2011, she was a Lecturer at the BVC (now BPTC) as well as on the LPC and delivered seminars to LLM students on the Right to Silence and the Pitfalls of Identification Evidence. She is an accredited ATC Advocacy Trainer (now the ICCA) and holds a higher education teaching qualification, MA Academic Practice, Module 1 (City Law School).
Since returning to full time practice in 2011, Ursula has represented clients at all levels up to the Court of Appeal in Asylum, Immigration, EEA and Public Law cases. She continues to represent many clients from different countries at risk of persecution/treatment contrary to Article 3. She drafted an application to the ECtHR alleging a breach of Article 3 ECHR, thereby preventing removal to Sri Lanka under a Rule 39 interim measure pending judgment in the case of GJ & others and more recently an Article 8 ECHR application in a criminal deportation case.

In the past, Ursula has represented FRU clients in social security and employment law cases and appeared in disciplinary hearings before the ACCA and ICAEW Disciplinary Committees as well as successfully bringing cases at the ICAEW Investigation Committee stage. She has also been involved in setting up a charitable organisation to assist women from ethnic backgrounds in obtaining counselling and emotional support for domestic abuse or mental health issues.
Ursula enjoys travelling and is CELTA qualified. She has frequently visited the Balkans to witness the reality of the post-war situation in Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia, where she has also taught English. She is fluent in Polish and has a basic grasp of Serbian and Croatian. She continues to be involved in raising awareness of the ongoing landmine problems in Bosnia.
Having seen the reality of torture and conflict in post-war countries, I am passionate about saving lives and giving hope to victims of torture. I believe in providing realistic advice and will explore all options to give my clients every possibility of success.
